Le lotus bleu (The Blue Lotus) was first pre-published in black and white from 9 August 1934 to 17 October 1935 in the pages of Le Petit Vingtième – the youth supplement of the newspaper Le Vingtième Siècle – under the title Les Aventures de Tintin reporter en Extrême-Orient, before being published in an album of 124 plates under its definitive title by Casterman. The album was revised and coloured in 1946.
